91a Norwood High Street – victory for local residents

Yesterday evening (19 May), Lambeth’s Licensing Committee rejected the latest licensing application for 91a Norwood High Street.

Residents may recall that last summer Carl, Andrew, Suzanne and Graham worked with residents on a successful campaign to oppose the opening of a lap dancing club.

Although the Council did eventually grant a licence to Mr Kane for a family restaurant and bar he never subsequently opened the business.  Since then the premises has changed hands and Lambeth Council recently received an application for the Glory Oatway Sports Club with opening times as late as 3am at weekends.

There are family homes in very close proximity to the venue that would be likely to suffer from unacceptable levels of noise pollution.  Ongoing concerns around public safety and possible anti-social behaviour and public disorder associated with the clientele of a night club also exist.  In addition, there have also been allegations of illegal drug taking at the venue.

At last night’s meeting, Andrew and Suzanne supported the objections of local residents and represented the residents of Gipsy Hill ward.  The residents living nearby to the venue spoke against the application and did a fantastic job in outlining their concerns and highlighting to the committee the detrimental effect the club would have on their lives and indeed on the local area in general.

Suzanne says:  “I am pleased to say that the Committee rejected  the application to the huge relief of local residents and councillors.”

As local councillors, we are committed to seeing the redevelopment of West Norwood as a thriving area with good quality businesses that bring benefit to the local community.  We will continue to fight for this on behalf of residents.
