Dustcarts dumped in Vale Street

Labour Councillors have decided to continue using Vale Street as a depot for Lambeth’s dustcarts, despite strong opposition from local residents.  The issue now goes to the Planning Committee.

In 2006, Lambeth decided to site a dustcart depot in Vale Street.  Labour councillors claimed that this would be temporary – until September 2009 – to allow time to build a permanent depot for the trucks.  The local MP sent a letter in favour of siting the trucks on this site.  Local residents and Andrew, Suzanne and Graham strongly opposed this plan.

Andrew said:  “The trucks are too large for residential areas such as Martell Road and Clive Road.  They cause traffic congestion and pollution.

“We said that once the trucks were here, we didn’t trust the council to remove them.  However, the council pressed ahead and our worst fears proved correct. The council has failed to create a permanent site, and has no immediate plans to do so even though it will cost up to £1.5million a year more to continue as we are.”

Labour tell residents: Take your rubbish to Battersea

Labour councillors have decided to restrict the type of rubbish local households can dump at the Vale Street Depot. From 1 April only
recyclable rubbish can be taken to the site. All other rubbish has
to be taken to Battersea!

Lambeth claims that this is because, of the 6,000 tons of household waste
dumped at Vale Street, 4,800 tons is dumped by businesses or non-Lambeth residents; but that is due to their mismanagement.

“It is unreasonable to expect local residents to drive to Battersea to dump their rubbish simply because Lambeth cannot run the site effectively,” says
local campaigner Carl Belgrove.

“Lambeth refused requests to look at how other Councils run their amenity
sites.  Nor did they look at re-siting the service elsewhere nearby, such as and away from residential properties.”
