Safer Crossings
Carl, Andrew and Suzanne have succeeded in getting council officers to trial a pedestrian crossing outside the Hollybush pub on Westow Street.
Currently, residents trying to get to Westow Street from Gipsy Hill take their life in their hands. If this trial goes well the crossing will be made permanent.
Carl says: “We won’t take no for an answer. Pedestrians need to be able to cross safely and a permanent green man is urgently needed before someone is run over.”

We the undersigned believe that the traffic lights at the junction of Gipsy Hill and Central Hill offer no safe opportunities for pedestrians to cross. Lambeth Council, Croydon Council and the London Assembly must work together to make this crossing safer before someone is run over.

It is almost impossible to safely cross the road here - the elderly and infirm are particularly at risk.

It's not just about getting too and from sainsburys, I am a pregnant woman who uses the triangle every week for local shopping and socialising but find it impossible to cross at this junction, i either have to wait for the traffic to stop and build up so i can squeeze through cars or move further down the road and wait, mostly unsuccessfully, for a nice driver to stop to let me cross. I also drive around this area and know the later is not practical as it then blocks the junction and cars behind.

I take my 5 year old boy to Paxton School in the mornings and have to cross at this point. It is very hazardous. If I don't cross here the only other option with a pedestrian crossing is right at the other end of Westow Hill.

Please please! This crossing is a danger for our children twice a day! Do something!

Please put in a proper crossing at this junction! I have to navigate across it all the time with my baby in a pushchair and hope that we don't get run down!

very dangerous crossing, no gap in traffic for pedestrians to cross you have to run when you get a chance.

This is a dangerous intersection. Anyone who lives on the Gipsy Hill side needs to wait for a gap in the traffic and run across- often risky due to speedy cars or drivers who don't indicate properly. A pedestrian crossing is long overdue and should not have a huge impact on traffic if planned properly.

Because the traffic is so bad drivers get annoyed and go through the red lights which make it even more dangerous to cross the junction.

I think consideration for a crossing at the junction of Gipsy Hill & Gipsy Road should be considered for access to the Paxton Green Surgery as th bus stops are across the road

Please don't wait until someone is seriosly injured!

I often walk down to Gypsy Hill and find this Junction scary to cross at. Whilst on the subject of unsafe crossing points may I also mention the crossing at Church Road/Westow Hill/Anerley Road (junction near the Chinese restaurant/Noodle Place ???)is also quite dangerous.Cars come speeding down from the Crystal Palace Parade to avoid the lights and use the Church Road as some sort of a racing track. Thanks

This is long overdue and should have been forseen when the triangle was made one-way: crossng on the return journey from Sainsbury's etc is a particular problem as you have no pedestrian right of way in the traffic light sequencing and you have to turn round to assess the traffic that might be turning left: This is not easy when pushing a buggy ,carrying shopping or when wearing a hood in rain. Of course it must be equally difficult when you are elderly or disabled as the time to cross is very short.

Please let's not wait for an accident before a safe crossing is put in place at this junction.
Another suggestion, why not put a small zebra crossing across the road where MacDonalds used to be opposite the chinese restaurant.

Have to risk life and limb crossing twice a day at this dangerous junction.
Rachel Church, SE19 3AS
Please do something about this crossing. I use it every day with small children and there is no safe way to use it, especially as you cannot see the traffic coming around the corner and they cannot see you.

As a mother who crosses this junction fairly regularly whilst pushing a buggy (on the Central Hill side down onto Gipsy Hill) I'm appalled by the lack of safety measures that are in place for pedestrians here. The councils responsible for this area should act quickly to resolve this situation before an accident occurs

A very tricky place to cross.

This is an unsafe junction for pedestrians. The traffic already backs up along Central Hill more than it ever did before the introduction of the one-way system. The replacement of the mini-roundabout at the Crystal Palace Parade junction with traffic lights (not just pedestrian-controlled traffic lights) is in my opinion the major cause of traffic back-ups and you might wish to explore the reversal of this. The whole one-way system unfortunately seems to have been ill-conceived and the problems it was intended to address could have been solved simply by applying the one-way rules to heavy lorries and buses.

This crossing is dreadfully dangerous to navigate - I have a small baby in a pram and find it very difficult to cross.

I noticed an elderly gentleman come inches from being knocked over the other day. It is shameful that proper arrangements have not been made to allow pedestrians to cross safely.

Please ensure that no one gets injured or even killed trying to cross here!

This junction is absolutely horrible for pedestrians and it needs to change. Why should cars always take priority.

I think it's appalling that there is no pedestrian crossing at this junction. Does somebody have to be killed before the council will take action?
xxxxxxxx, SE19 1JU
It is disgraceful that nothing has been done yet.Are the councils waiting for a fatality befor ethey do anything ?

This junction is downright dangerous for pedestrians. Crossing from Gipsy Hill to Westow street involves rushing across Central Hill during a limited pause in traffic at the lights. Even then you run the risk of being hit by cars turning left out of Westow Street. For parents crossing with children or the elderly and infirm it is impossible or highly hazardous. Croydon Councillors know this as they witnessed the problem first hand during a walkabout over 2 years ago - promises were made but nothing has been done.Lambeth's reasoning is rubbish. Central Hill backs up because of traffic congestion in Westow Hill, not because of pedestrians trying to cross the road. In any event Central Hill is a very long road and traffic could back up safely to allow for a controlled pedestratian crossing. Both councils are putting traffic flow and cost before the safety of their residents. they owe a duty of care and are failing in this regard. What will it take - a death ?

Adding a pedestrian phase at this junction would make a great improvement to road safety: a crossing specifically on the western arm of the junction would also assist traffic from Westow Street and Gypsy Hill moving round the Triangle.

As the former chair of Crystal Palace Chamber of Commerce I lobbied for improvements at this junction. My proposal is still online at http://www.norwoodchamber.org.uk/pdf/n200408.pdf - the argument of traffic backing up is irrelevant, because it backs up on westow hill anyway - it is possible to rephase the lights so that there are improved crossing facilities without holding up traffic - discussions were held with Russell A'Court on this matter - also see http://www.virtualnorwood.com/forum/topic/1319-westow-street-westow-hill-junction/
