Upper Norwood Library Campaign

Carl, Andrew and Suzanne support Upper Norwood Library's independence and the need for funding

Gipsy Hill Conservative councillors have always been active supporters of the Upper Norwood Library.  Recently, they invited Ed Vaizey the Conservative Shadow Arts Minister where he met with the Chief Librarian and members of the Library campaign.

Suzanne says: “We are extremely proud of the library, its independent status and its place at the heart of the community.  We were delighted that the shadow minister was willing to come and visit the library as its status is unique in the country and extremely well run.  We will continue to campaign to maintain the library independence and for increased funding from both Lambeth and Croydon boroughs.”

Sadly, the library is still underfunded.  At every budget meeting for the past three years Conservative councillors have called for extra money to be invested in our library, but Labour-run Lambeth Council voted down the proposals.

As members of the library committee Graham and Suzanne urged Labour to at least increase the library’s budget to allow for inflation, but Labour were not willing to do so.  In the last seven years, whenever the Conservatives have controlled a council in Lambeth or Croydon we have increased the library’s bidget.  Labour-controlled councils have not given an extra penny in that period.
